The authors advocate a new means of delivering multichannel TV to the home, using the as-yet untapped millimetre-wave region of the radio spectrum. A Millimetre-wave Multichannel Multipoint Video Distribution Service (M/sup 3/VDS) would be compatible with satellite broadcasting and complementary to cable TV by assisting expansion of fringe-area coverage and economic in-filling. In addition it offers an early and rapid expansion of the customer base for programming, since service can be quickly established over the complete coverage area without disruptive major engineering work. Recent gallium arsenide (GaAS) monolithic integrated circuit developments are the key to the system, now enabling cost effective MM-wave receivers to be built.<>
