A progressive scanning 1250/501 HDTV colour camera and processing based on quincunx sampling

The HDTV European approach is based on a high definition 1250/50/1 standard using progressive scanning. The interest for such a standard is very understandable since progressive scanning facilitates greatly video signal processing and improves final subjective aspect of picture. But, these advantages are counter-balanced by some drawbacks such as very high video bandwidth and very high speed processing. It is well known that video bandwidth and bit rate parameters related to progressive scanning are twice those related to interlaced scanning and these considerations imply some 9 dB degradation on signal to noise ratio and some implementation limitations about digital processing. The solution described is very attractive since it preserves the main advantages of progressive scanning by overcoming the main objections attached to very high bandwidth signal processing.<
