On the Effectiveness of Hybridization, Engine Combustion Strategy and Vehicle Connectivity to Achieve High Efficiencies in Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Many different strategies for improving vehicle efficiency have been explored including vehicle electrification and hybridization, the implementation of more advance combustion strategies for internal combustion engines, and the integration of information from external sensors and routing into supervisory control algorithms. While each of these can provide an improvement, most studies have focused on only one or two of these methods and explored their suitability for light-duty passenger vehicles. In contrast, this study quantifies the relative impact of hybridization level, engine combustion strategy and vehicle connectivity (V2V, V2X,...) on the efficiency of heavy-duty vehicles.
