Stacked Dual Polarized Patch Array Antenna for Satellite Communication

This paper presents, design and development of dual polarized (Linear Horizontal and Linear Vertical) edge fed and aperture coupled stacked microstrip patch antenna array. Stacked elements are designed on RT Duroid 6002, upper patch is suspended on bottom side of top most layer and lower patch on top side of middle layer. The 4×8 antenna array is designed using four 2×2 sub arrays with two independent power divider network. The edge fed power divider network is connected to lower patch and aperture coupled power divider network is below ground layer. The analyzed return loss is better than 23dB in the frequency band of interest (3.60-3.64GHz). Measured return loss of the array is better than 17 dB in both polarizations over the band. Bandwidth for 20 dB return loss for both port is 7.5 %. Measured Gain of antenna at 3.62GHz is 22.5dBi for V-polarization and 22.6dBi for H-polarization, measured radiation patterns matches well with simulated radiation patterns.
