The Approach to Design of Problem-Oriented Reconfigurable Hardware Computational Units

The article presents an approach to designing specialized hardware computational units (CmUs) with the possibility of coarse-grained reconfiguration at several levels: the CmU structure, individual data processing units, and the target algorithm. The article discusses options for the design flow of CmU in the framework of the proposed approach and the organization of automated design tools. Two practical examples of the approach implementation with various features of the CmU structure organization and tools are presented. The application range of the proposed CmUs and the differences from alternative solutions are discussed. The proposed approach can be successfully used in the design of CmUs and accelerators for digital signal processing, the implementation of real-time control algorithms, hardware-in-the-loop modeling.
