Electron cyclotron emission measurements on TFTR

The size of the latest generation of tokamaks (TFTR, JET, JT-60) relative to the smaller tokamaks leads to a number of advantages for the measurement of electron temperature using ECE. The longer period of the temperature sawtooth (typically 10–80 ms) in TFTR has allowed the study of profile evolution during a sawtooth. The higher values of the single-pass optical depth, resulting from the larger major radius, have allowed the temperature to be measured during plasma startup and near the plama edge, where the density and temperature are low. Furthermore, the spatial resolution relative to the plasma diameter has improved, making the detailed study of profile shapes possible.
