Towards an OpenCNC

OpenCNC initiative aims to open traditionally closed CNC controllers to the end users and machine tool builders. It should enable CNC users to configure CNC systems on their own, combining software and hardware components from different vendors. For machine tool builders it means ability to simply expand an existing automated system or design completely new automation solutions. This paper presents an OpenCNC solution that enables direct servo drive control. The paper shows how ubiquitous communication interfaces and open-source microcontrollers can simplify development of OpenCNC solutions. Thankful to direct control of servo drives this solution offers implementation of improved control algorithms that can include real time data about machine states and machining processes.
