Novel Signal Integrity Application of Power Wave Scattering Matrix theory

The power wave scattering matrix theory allows for maximum power transfer pertaining to zero reflections. The condition of zero reflections is not realizable through the traveling wave scattering matrix theory given the requirement for the reference impedance to be defined as a real value and that the power transfer through a network is not taken into account. In this work, the application of power scattering matrix theory pertaining to signal integrity is presented. The first application of interpreting the frequency-dependent impedance characteristics looking into the network port presents an alternative means of interpreting the impedance characteristics without having to do an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform based Time Domain Reflectometry. The second application of calculating the noise in the insertion loss due to reflections coming from the channel termination presents a figure of merit for system optimization. This work is an attempt to present a methodology to characterize the frequency domain impedance characteristics looking into a network port and noise in the insertion loss due to reflections coming from the channel termination through the application of the power wave scattering matrix. This work is an attempt to present a methodology to quantify the amount of reflections in the channel.
