Design and Performance Comparison of Printed Monopole Antennas with Elliptical Radiator for UWB Applications

This paper introduces two simple designs of printed monopole antennas with elliptical radiator, based on perturbed ground planes, for use in UWB systems. These two designs are implemented on 0.8 mm thick FR4 substrate. By feeding the radiating element along the major and minor axis, respectively, with truncated ground plane, two different configurations are achieved that realizes wider impedance bandwidth satisfying the UWB specifications. The first designed antenna exhibits an operating bandwidth from 3.21 GHz-12.38 GHz, whereas for the case of second design, the bandwidth is enhanced to a wider frequency range varying from 1.6-12.40 GHz. Omni-directional radiation patterns, along with appreciable gain characteristics for both antenna configurations are obtained in this paper.
