Influence of Joint Reinforcement Anchorage Detailing on the Seismic Performance of Double-Column Bridge Piers

To investigate the seismic performance of double-column bridge piers with headed reinforcement anchorage and conventional hooked bar anchorage, two reinforced concrete test models were fabricated at a scale of 1:5. Pseudostatic tests were conducted to investigate the effect of anchorage detailing on the hysteretic performance of the bridge pier models and to analyze the ductility, energy dissipation capacity, and residual displacement of the two models through comparison. By comparing two models, the following results were obtained: (1) The two models exhibit similar failure phenomena, however, the spalling and crushing of concrete under the ultimate load are more significant in the latter case than in the former case; (2) For the double-column pier with headed reinforcement anchorage, the ductility decreased slightly, whereas the bearing capacity was improved. Thus, headed reinforcement anchoring can be used in the joints of bridge piers to reduce the anchoring length and other advantages.
