Study on Impact Resistance of Urban Prefabricated Bridge Piers Under Vehicle Impact Loadings

In order to investigate the failure mechanism and impact resistance of prefabricated bridge piers under vehicle impact loadings, the key technology incorporated in the numerical simulation for predicting vehicle collisions the behavior of prefabricated bridge piers subject to is discussed. A case study based on the Jiamin Viaduct is conducted by numerical simulations, during which the impact resistance of piers corresponding to three types of connections, i.e. grouting sleeve connection pier, socket connection prefabricated pier and cast-in-place pier, are compared. The results indicate that all piers are observed in shear-flexure failure type. The impact resistance of prefabricated piers is slightly worse than that of cast-in-place piers. It is recommended that the position of grouting sleeve be arranged at the bottom of pier, and the socket connection component needs sufficient embedding depth.
