An Accurate, Power and Area Efficient 13.33x Charge Pump with Wide-Range Programmability for Biomedical Sensors

A power and area efficient charge pump (CP) with a wide output range is proposed for biomedical applications. The CP powers up the data transmitters in the biomedical sensors at regular intervals of 3ms. It provides a maximum energy of 750nJ to transmitter in 500ns during each transmission cycle. The CP works on 1.8V supply and outputs 7.5V- 24V in steps of 1.2 V. The output inaccuracy of CP is <1% for all programmable outputs with a low leakage current of 380nA in standby mode. The CP include fly MIM-capacitors implemented in metal 5-6, which cover the digital circuitry beneath making it area efficient. The proposed CP is implemented in 180nm BCD process and occupies 0.038 mm² of active area.
