Research on the Antecedents of Users' Innovative Use of IT Based on the Work Competence Theory

Users' behavior is a key effect factor of successful application of IT. However, extant research has focused on the in-role behaviors such as IT adoption and routine IT usage, while the research on users' innovative use of IT which belongs to extra-role behaviors is still limited. Based on the research gap of innovative use of IT at the individual level and work competence theory, this paper analyzed the antecedents of innovative use of IT. Hypotheses are proposed and tested with the data collected by a survey of 156 ERP users. The results show that attitude towards innovation, IT application knowledge, extraversion, and management support have important effects on innovative use of IT at the individual level. Implications of the research results are discussed.
