Design and Analysis of a Novel Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machine Using Finite-Element-Method

Synchronous reluctance machines without field excitation on the rotor suffer from small power and torque density and low power factor. To overcome this challenge, permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance machines (PMa-SynRMs) were presented. In this paper, the design and investigation of a novel topology for a PMa-SynRM that uses Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets is proposed for enhancement in machine characteristics and performance. The characteristics of proposed topology, including the flux density of the airgap and the electromagnetic torque, are compared with a conventional PMa-SynRM using finite element method (FEM). With the purpose of having an impartial comparison, the stator dimension and winding of both motors are considered to be the same.
