ARINC 818 Revision 3

ARINC 818-2, the Avionics Digital Video Bus (ADVB), was ratified in 2014 and continues to be the video bus of choice for all modern avionics cockpit display implementations around the world. ARINC 818 is also being adopted for cameras and sensors where reliability, error correction, and critical timing are required. All of these devices are requiring higher and higher bandwidth because of increasing resolutions, frame rates, and data requirements. In 2019, ARINC 818-3 will be released, adding higher data rates and encoding. This will allow for technologies such as 4k and 8k displays, windowless cockpits, VR, and high bandwidth sensors and cameras around the aircraft. This paper will review the current technical issues under consideration for supplement 3 and their potential applications. Updates to the specification to add new features and capability keep the standards and implementations fresh, ensuring that industry needs are being anticipated and met. The ARINC 818-3 standardization process brings the participants, engineers, and customers all together cooperatively so that the ARINC 818 ecosystem remains healthy and vibrant.
