Output Matching Network Design for Highly Efficient InP-DHBT W-Band PAs Utilizing a Defected Ground Structure

Output matching networks (OMNs) are substantially determining the performance of millimetre wave power amplifiers (PAs). In terms of efficiency, there are two major requirements for OMNs: First is to meet matching conditions up to a certain harmonic frequency based on the results of harmonic load pull analysis. Second is to keep matching network losses as low as possible. The main challenge for PA design is to meet both demands at the same time. This paper describes a design procedure for highly efficient W-band InP-DHBT MMIC PAs and presents a novel improved OMN utilizing a defected ground structure (DGS) that both improves harmonic tuning and decreases network losses compared to conventional transmission line approaches.
