Radio Frequency Identification Using Reader Based on a Multi-Port Junction

A new approach to design and development of RFID reader based on a multi-port reflectometer is suggested in the paper. The possibility of reader operation (read/write) range increase using this approach is shown. The pivot element of the proposed reader is the combined multi-port reflectometer, which can be used in two possible configurations. The first configuration implies the measurement of output ports' powers, rather than alternative configuration consists in use of subsequent down conversion unit of the measuring frequency. An important feature of the proposed calibration procedure is the lack of precision calibration standards for reflection or transmission that simplifies and cheapens the meter drastically. The CMR design is described and the measuring method is considered. The simulation results of measurement and calibration processes for the described meter are presented, which confirmed the high efficiency of its use as a reader in RFID systems.
