Single-Channel LoRaWAN Gateway for Remote Indoor Monitoring System: An Experimental

Nowadays, Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) is one of the most implemented wireless networking protocol for Internet of Things (IoT). It offers lowpowered devices to communicate over long-range wireless connections, taking advantage the spread-spectrum modulation technique as well as leveraging the unlicensed spectrum in Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) frequency bands. This paper describes a LoRa connection comprising a gateway and several nodes connected to The Thing Network (TTN). A lowcost single-channel LoRaWAN gateway was deployed to investigate the network packets and LoRa coverage, when information exchanged back and forth within the network. Even though single-channel LoRaWAN used a simple radio module to connect the gateway and the end nodes, its capability has yet to be investigated, specifically in terms of the network packet loss and the signal strength. Thus in this work, the end devices to sense the temperature and humidity were integrated to the LoRaWAN. The results suggested that the packet loss was highly occurred when the node was placed at farthest distance, exceeded 40 meters, due to a lot of noise.
