Active flow control in Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine using PI-R controllers

The most fundamental control of wind turbines operations are guaranteed through a Active flow control techniques. This involves the adjusting of aerodynamic profile around the rotor structure against periodic structural loading. The pitch control is a predominant control which protects the blade structures from the momentary fatigue application on the turbine structure. The Individual pitch control (IPC) is the successor of conventional collective pitch control technique. The search for an optimum control strategy commanding the pitching sensors is prevailing around the wind turbine research. The typical research concentrates on the periodic and balanced loads induced on the turbine structure. But there are also unbalanced load due to stochastic nature of wind which induce non linearity in wind turbine. This work proposes the PI-R controller for the Individual pitching control in wind turbine. In this work IPC triggered using the PI controllers along with two resonant controllers to tackle both balanced and unbalanced loads. The benchmark NREL FAST 1.5 MW wind turbines frameworks is applied for the purposes of simulations. The performance and operation of the recommended controllers are evaluated using the MLIFE program of the NREL and MATLAB interface.
