Implementation of Hybrid Photovoltaic and Wind Energy Conversion System for Traffic Surveillance and Road Lighting

Conservation of energy can be observed in the utilization of renewable energies. In this paper, the capabilities of Solar Energy and Wind Energy are used to provide power to the CCTV and LED. The idea is to harness the wind coming from vehicular air drag and combine it with the output of the solar panels. The Hybrid Vertical Axis Wind Turbine was studied on how it can be partnered with Solar Panels. Considered also in this study are the different switching of the system that is based on: state of charge of batteries and real time clock. The performance of the system was observed through the use of multi-meters, tachometer and anemometer. The results were evaluated with the use of graphs with curves. For the tests, parameters such as: noload voltage (wind & solar), full load voltage (wind & solar), current, wind speed, rpm and time duration were considered. At the end of the Day to Night Test performed on the NLEX, the battery can be fully charged for about 1.5 hours from a 42.6% state of charge. The functionality of the prototype was evaluated not only on the NLEX, but also in MacArthur Highway. Both testing locations showed that the minimum wind requirement for the turbine to start spinning is at 2mph.
