Design and Simulation of a Compact Bow-tie Antenna for Cancer Detection and Treatment

A miniaturized Bow-tie antenna that resonates at 4.76 GHz frequency is designed and simulated. The proposed antenna aims at detecting and killing tumor that is responsible for cancer generation. The bandwidth of the antenna is 0.64 GHz in free space. Moreover, a gain of -1.42 dB and a high radiation efficiency of 75.8% are achieved in such condition. The antenna has a small volume of 34.46 × 23.8 × 1.67 mm

. The FR-4 lossy dielectric material with 1.6 mm thickness is selected as the substrate because it is economical and procurable. In addition, a biological tissue model with six layers including a 10 mm radius tumor inside the muscle layer is used to test the antenna performance for specified applications. To avoid the harmful effects of antenna radiation, the antenna is placed on the phantom maintaining 2.5 mm distance from it. The detection and treatment of cancer are confirmed from the increased value of SAR in tumor compared to the uninjured tissues.
