Characterisation of Perception Rating for Distinct Age Range via EEG Power Ratio Features

Perception is an ability to process and interpret sensory information. Often, this is analyzed in relation to cognitive and motor control. This paper proposes a study on varying perception rating using EEG power ratio features for distinct age range groups. Sixty-five healthy students have volunteered in the data collection. Resting EEG is initially recorded from the prefrontal cortex. The proposed control groups for perception ratings; high average, average, below average and impaired are established using T-scores from CTMT. Theta, alpha and beta ratio features extracted from the recorded EEG are analyzed for significant pattern among the control groups. Alpha ratio is positively correlated with increasing perception rating. Conversely, theta and beta ratio has demonstrated negative correlation. Generally, findings comply with neuronal synchronization and alpha suppression theories. Feature pattern is also observed for distinct age range groups. There is increasing trend of mean alpha ratio between the age ranges of 25 to 34 years. These provide support to preceding study which suggests the brain as having reached structural maturity at the age of 25 years.
