A Single‐node System

This chapter describes a single‐node system equipped with a synchronized and democratized (SYNDEM) smart grid research and educational kit. The kit is reconfigurable to obtain 10+ different topologies, covering DC/DC conversion and single‐phase/three‐phase DC/AC, AC/DC, and AC/DC/AC conversion, so it is ideal for carrying out research, development, and education of SYNDEM smart grids. A single‐node SYNDEM system is constructed with the SYNDEM kit; it is a single‐phase inverter fed by a DC source. It can be operated in the islanded mode and the grid‐connected mode. The chapter presents the implementation of the 2G virtual synchronous motor, i.e. the self‐synchronized universal droop controller, together with additional functions such as islanding detection in MATLAB/Simulink and directly downloaded to the DSP for execution.
