Multi-Stage Time-Ahead Optimal Scheduling of Multiple Resources Under the Presence of IPS

This paper presents multi-stage time-ahead scheduling of multiple resources for a power system under higher percentage of Intermittent Power Sources (IPSs). Forecasting error is linearly related to the length of time ahead of the forecasting which is done, use of gas turbines and Automatic Generation Control (AGC) capability of conventional units to balance the forecast error for IPS integrated power systems is not technically and economically feasible. A four stage time ahead scheduling is proposed with consideration of hybrid storage technologies consisting of Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for the IEEE-30 bus power system with 30% wind power integration from Zhangjiakou wind power system in China. The overall result indicates that the use of hybrid storage technologies with the proposed four stage scheduling methodology results in a minimal power balance problem and smoother operating of storage technologies.
