Denoising and DA release: application of the 4D denoised reconstruction HYPR4D-K-OSEM

A novel 4D denoised reconstruction, HYPR4D-K-OSEM, has recently been proposed and shown to have superior contrast recovery vs noise trade-off. These properties are well-suited to the application of detecting voxel-level transient dopamine release, where denoising is essential for detecting the small signal changes that occur during release. Previous work has shown that applying a wide post-filter followed by HYPR postprocessing to the standard OSEM reconstruction optimizes detection sensitivity, but increases false positive signal and decreases accuracy. Here we present preliminary results from simulated data demonstrating that HYPR4D offers a further ~20% increase in sensitivity over this standard method while simultaneously improving accuracy-a testament to its ability to provide superior spatiotemporal denoising while preserving temporal patterns in the data.
