Using Metallic Coil to Optimize the Heating Efficiency for Tumor Hyperthermia

Instead of using magnetic nanoparticles in magnetically mediated hyperthermia for tumor therapy, metallic loops are adopted to avoid particles diffusion. In order to effectively heat the tumor to a desired temperature while keeping the healthy tissue at the normal temperature, the geometrical parameters of the power transmitter and receiver coils and the operating frequency are optimized to improve the heating efficiency, under the restriction of biocompatible materials for implanted metal coils. The advantage of the proposed method is verified through a design example. The heating efficiency can be improved from 1% of the existing design to more than 4% of the proposed design for a 0.5-mm radius implanted single-turn titanium coil at 5-MHz operating frequency.
