Phase Locked Loop based Resonator Driving IC with Negative Charge Cancelling

This paper presents a low power resonator driving IC for nano-resonator. To reduce power consumption and phase distortion, the resonator driving IC consists of a phase locked loop (PLL) structure. Using the inverter-based negative charge cancelling method, the parasitic capacitor is removed in a simple structure with low power consumption. The proposed resonator driving IC consists of a charge pump phase frequency detector (CPPFD), voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), trans impedance amplifier (TIA), comparator, inverter and negative capacitor. The TIA is composed of the Monticelli class AB structure to improve power efficiency. The proposed PLL based resonator driving IC is implemented in a 180 nm 1P6M CMOS technology and the power consumption of the proposed resonator driving IC is 2.17 mW with 1.8 V supply. When driving a resonator with a resonance frequency of 7.2 MHz and a Q-factor of 50, the proposed PLL based resonator driving IC has a resonance frequency of 7.26 MHz, a Q-factor of 103,863 amplified by 20000 times and a phase noise of −83 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset.
