Improving Performance of the Lithium Polymer Battery Module Part 2: Investigating Thermal Performance of PCM in Cold Temperature

This study is about investigating lithium polymer pouch battery warm up condition with phase change materials during cold temperature of -21°C. Extreme temperature conditions are not suitable for the battery, because due to uneven chemical reactions at low temperatures, resulting in unexpected starting problems of vehicle sometimes. To avoid such issues, we proposed thermal management system with phase change materials(PCMs). Experiments were conducted with RT15, RT31, EG5 and EG26 and also without phase change materials around the battery and expose battery to cold weather conditions for long time known as cold soaking. Compare the battery thermal conditions with and without PCMs. With PCMs, the battery can remain warm upto 8 hours. The warm rate with PCMs improved by 70% are observed when compared with no PCMs. In previous study part1, thermal management for the battery exposed to high temperatures were studied.
