Interaction of RF-radiation and Biological Tissues in the Process of Transcutaneous Energy Transfer to Implantable Medical Devices

There are many problems with the operation of implantable medical devices. One of them is the problem of providing power to the device. One way to solve this problem is to use wireless power transfer (WPT). Radiofrequency radiation (RF) is common for these purposes. Accordingly, the fundamental interactions of radiation and biological tissues were examined. Low-frequency and high-frequency systems were analyzed with respect to receiver sizes, transmitted power and specific absorption rate (SAR). The values of the SAR do not exceed the maximum allowable values in low-frequency systems, and the sizes of the receivers are about 3–9 cm. The sizes of the receivers of high-frequency systems are approximately 2–5 mm, but the SAR in tissues can achieve critical values.
