Coupled- Mode Patch Antenna with Improved Bandwidth and Scanning Angle Range

The Coupled-Mode Patch Antenna (CMPA) realizes reconfigurable patterns on a single patch antenna. The operating bandwidth and scanning angle range, however, limits its application. In this paper, we propose a general co-designing procedure to improve the bandwidth and the in-band scanning angle range of CMPA while maintaining the compact size and simplicity. An E-shape CMPA is demonstrated as an example. The proposed antenna achieves well-matched three-pole response with a fractional bandwidth of 6.2% centering at 2.37 GHz, and in-band scanning angle range of 35° in the measurement. The procedure provides a practical solution to improve the bandwidth and scanning range for any type of CMPA.
