Simulation and validation of a pneumatic pressure booster based on an automotive turbocharger

In pneumatic systems constant pressure supply is used to provide the power necessary for the different loads and consumers within that system. On some occasions, certain components require a higher pressure than available. Currently, pressure boosters are used to increase the pressure locally. However, those systems have some disadvantages like noise emission. A new concept suggests that using a turbocharger might solve that problem by increasing the system pressure in a compressor while simultaneously decompressing the fluid in a turbine. This paper presents simulation results obtained by using the software AmeSim by Siemens, an integrated simulation platform for multidisciplinary system simulation. For validation, the experimental approach of using a turbocharger for local pressure increase is presented and a comparison with an existing solution is conducted. The focus is set on the energetic and exergetic properties of the system and benefits in comparison to existing pressure boosting systems.
