Shape Optimization of Cylindrical Electrode Geometries to Mimic Orbitrap

This paper presents novel simplified geometries which are useful in approximating the electric field of the Orbitrap. These geometries consist of a set of cylindrical rings and are simple to manufacture. The axial positions of rings have been optimized by using a newly proposed objective function which tries to minimize the higher order harmonics present in the axial ion motion. It will be shown that the proposed method of optimization significantly improves the quality of electric field in the simplified geometries of the Orbitrap.
