Performance Enhanced Liquid Level Sensing System For Dynamic Environments

A level measurement system using Fiber Bragg Grating sensor (FBG) is proposed for measuring the level effectively with high accuracy and high sensitivity compared to the traditional level measurement systems which is used in automotive fuel tanks. The sensor have two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) fixed in an elongated cantilever beam in a way that it can compensate the temperature effect of the FBGs automatically and the Bragg's wavelength shift shows the level change of the liquid. In dynamic environments such as change in surrounding temperature affects the property of liquid in the storage tanks and the conventional sensor produces erroneous level measurement readings resulting in poor accuracy measurements. The impact of this dynamic environment on the liquid measurement system based on cantilever sensors has not been studied in detail so far. Currently, there are no reliable and practical solutions available to measure the liquid level under such environment. In the proposed method, a Fibre Bragg Grating cantilever based sensor system will be developed to address the existing gaps in measuring the liquid quantity under dynamic environments particularly suited for use in automotive fuel tanks. For enhancing the accuracy of the liquid quantity measurement system operating in dynamic environment, here suitable signal processing as well as machine learning approach i.e. Wavelet Neural Network (WNN) are used. Such solution will have significant impact in the industry, including the automotive, petro-chemical and medical domains.
