Development of BLDC Motor-Pump System for Energy efficient Applications

In domestic areas, clear water pumping applications, predominantly two pole single phase induction motors are used with the motors of rating 0.37 kW, 0.75 kW, 1.1 kW and 1.5 kW. The overall efficiency or electrical to water efficiency of these pumps is poor due to low efficiency of the single phase induction motors which is used as a prime mover, and also, the low pump efficiency. The performance parameters of the pump such as discharge of water and the working head depends on the speed of the prime mover. Induction motors with two pole design has an average load speed of 2820 to 2880 rpm. Therefore, a BLDC motor with speed of 3000 rpm will improve the pump performance. Hence, in this paper a BLDC motor-self priming pump is designed and developed to improve the performance such as output discharge, working head and overall conversion efficiency. The 370 watts, 24 volts BLDC motor-driven self priming monoset pump is designed and tested. The results show that the performance is improved and motor-pump system is energy efficient.
