Development and Clinical Validation of GearVision - A Smartphone Based Head Mounted Perimeter

Automated visual field perimetry, performed on the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser (HFA), is key to early detection of visual field defects. However, HFA's large footprint limits its reach in the context of screening in remote environments and personal settings. To address this, we had proposed GearVision, a smartphone based head mounted perimeter, based on commercially available devices. GearVision enables regular and cost-effective visual field testing with minimal dependency on trained professionals. In this paper, we describe the key features of the GearVision system. These include, a novel threshold algorithm to reduce test duration (without relying on threshold priors), an adaptive method to measure fixation loss accurately and a more detailed test report. We have further validated GearVi-sion's performance by comparing the visual field measurements obtained on GearVision and the clinical gold standard - HFA for 18 patients (35 eyes). The visual field reports generated by GearVision were in good coherence with the HFA. It can thus be concluded that GearVision is able to accurately detect visual field defects and can open up new avenues towards portable and affordable eye health care.
