Data Analysis between Numerical Simulation and High Frequency Ground Wave Radar during a Gale Weather Process

The sea gale data detected by the High-frequency ground wave radar (HFGWR) were evaluated by comparing the wind data from automatic meteorological stations and the simulation results of Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, during a gale weather process in Dalian on December 22-23, 2016. The results show that the gale process was mainly caused by the activities of high-level trough and cold air. The maximum wind force in Dalian was 5-6 and the gust was 8-9, with the maximum wind speed is 23m/s, the wind direction is mainly northerly. The simulation results of WRF model are consistent with the site observation data. Simulation results can reflect the change of average wind speed and can be used to represent the wind field on the sea. The detection wind field by HFGWR is fan-shaped, and detected data have high temporal and spatial resolution. The amount of detection data is proportional to the detection distance. Compared with the WRF simulation results, the wind direction of detected data are similar to the wind field of WRF results, mainly from north to northwest. Though wind speed are relatively larger than the simulation results, the spatial distribution and change trend are consistent. Comparing with the maximum wind speed of the nearby station, the detected data is closer to the gust wind speed, which means the radar data can be used for real-time gust monitoring.
