Stereotyped Emo Kids: A literature review

Emo subculture and emo music fandom had been considered as the cause of youth life problem, alienation, and negative behaviors, such as self-harm and suicide. This stereotype was used by public to discriminate against emo fans. This subculture and music genre were popular before 2010, or about 10 years ago. Nowadays, people previously engaged in the subculture does not show up having serious life problems, so the factors that help these young people overcome the discrimination should be explored. After reviewing many articles about emo music, subculture, psychology, and discrimination, it might be that emo kids used their favorite music to cope with negative experiences and to connect with other fans, as a social group. They may obtain some social support and family support to enhance their self-esteem and move through the discrimination. Future studies should confirm the assumption provided in the current article. The strategies that emo kids used emo music as a part of coping skills should also be identified.
