High Data Density Encoding Resonator for Ultra Wideband Chipless RFID Tag

The increasing number of sensor nodes in an Internet of Things network has enabled a new technology of tracking and identification - chipless RFID technology to replace the traditional technologies. The advantages brought by such technology are cost effectiveness, high data density and ease of fabrication. In this article, an H-shaped resonator was proposed to achieve the densely populated bits in a chipless tag. This resonating structure can be used for encoding the signals in the 2 - 4 GHz frequency band. Despite working over the ultra wideband range to encode several bits, the tag can still retain a low dimension. By adjusting the branches of H-shaped resonators, 6-bit encoding is obtained. The simulated and measurement results demonstrate that this novel design for chipless RFID tag has good performance in data encoding.
