Image-Based Remote Fault-Detection System For Single Line Diagrams(SLDs)

Monitoring and controlling the entire electrical grid at 24 hours per day is the most critical problem. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems in control centers used to monitor and control the grid by the human operators. This paper discusses a practical solution to alarm the operators with any abnormal changes in Single Line Diagrams (SLD) in SCADA system automatically. This approach detects any abnormal changes in the SLD elements in each bay (line or transformer). Moreover, its sends a notification message to the operator's mobile that contains these abnormal changes. The proposed approach uses shape feature extraction based on morphological operation and image detection based on background subtraction algorithm. It is composed of three stages, image preprocessing, shape recognition and color detection. The results of the proposed approach were validated by comparing the real time data in the SCADA system with text messages resulting from the proposed approach. The main attractive features of this approach are to provide data to the operator in an efficient, rapid and decentralized manner without compromising the security of the SCADA system
