Studies on Metamaterial CRLH-TL Based Wideband/Multiband Dual Performance Circularly Polarized Conformal Antenna for Modern Wireless Applications

This work deals with the design and development of dual performance metamaterial based conformal antenna for modern wireless applications. The antenna utilizes a composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) unit cell for antenna miniaturization. at 2.61 GHz. Without conformality, the antenna (Antenna-3) provides a wideband response (2.71-6.16 GHz) with a percentage bandwidth of 77.7% and simulated average gain of 3.6dBi throughout the entire band is observed. When the bending angle φ = 360° (Antenna 4) a dual resonance behaviour is observed with the first band at 2.61 GHz (2.6-2.63 GHz) and a second band at 6.15 GHz (5.31-7 GHz) with a percentage bandwidth of 1.14% and 27.45% observed at two frequency bands. The intended antenna provides a gain of 2.5 dBic and 3.1 dBic for the two bands respectively. The novelty of the work is CRLH-TL based low profile compact antenna can be used as a wide-band antenna (Antenna-3) as well as a multiband antenna (Antenna-4) with conformality by changing the bending angle is firstly explaining in literature. Also, by using conformality the antenna can be used in curved surfaces and a good overall area reduction is observed. By changing the φ, bidirectional to omnidirectional pattern reconfigurability also observed from the transition of Antenna-3 to Antenna-4 are observed.
