Design of an IP Based Communication Terminal to Provide High Fidelity Voice and Data Communication

Marine communication system is one of the most important operation of the ship. Improper communication among the different parts of the ship can cause information breach and failure of a mission. The proposed paper consists of a network with a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) server, which performs routing, monitoring and also transmission of the voice, image and text. This is used for external communications like ship to ship, ship to shore; and internal communication within the ship. The proposed work mainly focuses on internal communication that can be used to establish a peer to peer communication between Consoles, PCs and IP phones. It provides unicast, multicast and broadcast communication techniques and also enables group and conference calls with priority. It aims to provide an overview of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, focusing on SIP and Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP & RTCP) which are used to transfer and monitor the voice and data. To address the parameters which improve the voice performance metrics a device called Digital Speech Level Analyzer (DSLA) is used. To keep in pace with communication technology, VoIP based SIP softphone (software telephone) is developed and ported on the high end computing communication terminal (console) to address internal voice and data communication needs. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) for application developed is very user friendly and can be configured for the desired features.
