A New Noninvasive Blood Glucose Detection Technology for Mobile Phones or Smartphones

Diabetes is a major disease that compels patients to monitor and adjust their blood glucose level to maintain a healthy condition. In general, people suffering from diabetes tend to not like using traditional finger-prick devices before meal to monitor their glucose level. Hence, noninvasive blood glucose monitor is useful, but no commercial devices exist. Herein an innovative blood glucose monitoring device is developed on the basis of phase-shift technology that can be integrated with mobile phones or smartphones. The new device works by exploiting the change in the resonant and antiresonant frequencies caused by the phase-shift of light transmitted through a dielectric, such as a blood glucose medium. The basic performance characteristics of this new prototype monitor show that blood glucose levels can be accurately measured noninvasively on the fingertips. Furthermore, this study proposes the potential use of phase-shift resonance technology as a noninvasive sensor for a continuous blood glucose evaluation.
