Numerical Modelling of Cylindrical/ Spherical Hail Ice Behaviour Under High-Velocity Impact

The reliability of an aircraft structure such as the frontward portion of the aircraft, leading edges and engines inlets are actually in the risk of hailstone impact during rough weather. Nevertheless, the presence of hailstorm in the flight route can be predicted by weather analysis, in some cases, passes through hailstorm is unavoidable. In the process, the aircraft formative parts must indicate a suitable level of tolerance to damage impacted through a hailstone. Considering the experimental analysis of this impact being complex and costly, the numerical model formulation is important to assist the experimental analysis and model hail-proof components. In this study, a numerical model of hailstone has modelled using Lagrangian formulation using explicit finite element codes LS-DYNA. The current study has been motivated from investigational and numerical modelling of high-velocity hail ice strike on the rigid target and results are validated based on experimental studies.
