An Arduino based Speed and Rotor Position Measurement Technique for Electric Drives

PMSMs are now replacing other motors in all drive systems due to their advantages like high power density, high efficiency and low inertia. The most effective control method of PMSM is Field Oriented Control or vector control. However, for implementation of vector control, the knowledge of the rotor position with high degree of accuracy is necessary. Incremental encoders are commonly used to obtain the speed and rotor position information. This paper suggests an Arduino based speed measurement which can be used in incremental encoder equipped drives. The hardware implementation of vector control of PMSM is done using the above method and the results are given for verification.
