Design and Study of EM Coupled Dual Band Linear Array Antenna with Point to Multipoint Communication for Millimeter Wave Application

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) has gained a considerable growth in the last decade and stands first in the front end of the general Research and Development (R & D) sector that is concerned with receiving and transmitting data using RF waves remotely. Highly revolutionized today's communication system would require transmitting/receiving devices (antennas) with low cost, lower weight, a low profile and with the capability of operating over a wide range of frequencies with high performance. The electromagnetically (EM) coupled array antenna is one of the possible solutions and is a good substitute for wide/multiband antennas. In EM coupled antenna, the patch, and feed are separated from a substrate and transmission happens through coupling. The work presented through this paper aims at designing an optimized 1×8 EM coupled dual band linear array antenna with point to multipoint communication for millimeter wave application. The optimization goals are antenna size minimization, gain maximization with the reduced amount of return loss. The substrate used is the RT / Rogers-5880 with a dielectric constant of 2.2, tangent loss of 0.0009 mm and height of 0. 0635 mm. The antenna is simulated using High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS), one of the popular commercial electromagnetic software/tool. Performance parameters such as return loss, VSWR, gain, and radiation pattern are considered to present the goodness of the design and simulation of this array. The simulated antenna shows the best performance in terms of these parameters.
