Algorithm and Architecture of Fingerprint Mechanism – A Study

Biometric deals with identification and authentication of humans using biological characteristics. Identification of fingerprint is one of the oldest and common forms of biometrics. There are different ways of processing a fingerprint from input till its matching. One can use hardware and/or software in automatic fingerprint authentication system (AFAS) with some filters like Gaussian or Gabor filter. This paper compares various systems and algorithms approached and applied in the fingerprinting process. It is observed in these comparisons that a co-design of hardware and software with an anisotropic filter produces much efficient and faster results. Also, it can be concluded that for real-time applications FPGA platform is optimum because it is reconfigurable, low in cost, efficient in size and power.
