The Hardware Implementation of FPGA-Based Electromagnetic Transient System for New Energy Components

Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation plays an important role in modern power grids. Field-programmable gate array (FPGA) has become an important platform for EMT real-time simulation due to its special parallel structure. However, the introduction of new components on the existing EMT system requires high design efforts using hardware description language(HDL). To address this problem, this paper proposes a hybrid design method that combines the high-level synthesis (HLS) technology with a python platform to accelerate the procedure. The HLS technology is adopted to implement the calculation module of the new component so that the development time can be reduced. In addition, the python platform is designed to realize the coarse-grained optimization strategies and generate the top-level module of the updating subsystem automatically. Moreover, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) has been taken as an example to be introduced to the existing FPGA EMT system using the proposed method, the result demonstrates that this method not only shortens the development time, but also obtains high-performance hardware.
