Comparison of AC-DC Converter Topologies Used for Battery Charging in Electric Vehicle

One major problem with electric vehicles is its range anxiety. Hence, there is a need to develop an AC charger, which transfers power directly from the residential grid to the Electric Vehicle (EV). Converters used in charging of electric vehicle results in various drawbacks such as harmonic distortions at input source, large switching losses as well as poor Power Factor (PF). This paper will explore topologies used for charging of EVs using residential AC grid by means of Conventional AC-DC converter, Interleaved AC-DC Boost converter & Zero Voltage Switching Interleaved AC-DC boost Power Factor Correction (PFC) Converter with the goal of lowering total system cost, harmonics & losses while diminishing range anxiety and providing supplemental grid services.
