FPGA Implementation of Boolean Functions Using Decoders and Logic Gates

A laboratory board based on Spartan-6 FPGA is created at the University of Ruse and it is intended for teaching the courses "Digital Circuits" and "Pulse and Digital Devices", introducing the students of the electrical specialties to the main topics of digital electronics. Based on configuring the logic blocks in FPGAs complex Boolean functions are performed. In these courses students study how to build a circuit using logic gates (for example, only 2-input NAND logic gates) or using some functional units of combinational type: decoders and multiplexers. One of the topics covered in the courses is the synthesis and analysis of devices implementing given Boolean functions using decoders (or a cascade of decoders) and logic gates. Implementing different Boolean functions using their schematic presentation and testing it on the board is presented in the paper.
