Study and analysis of infrared illumination settings towards detection of hidden veins

The proposed explorative study involved finding optimum characteristics of infrared illumination for image acquisition by IR sensitive camera suitable to detect hidden and difficult to detect veins. The prevalent procedure to detect veins by image sensor involves absorption of specific wavelength of infrared (IR) light due to deoxygenated blood flowing in the veins. The proposed work involved designing of motorized illumination setup using two double layered LED arrays having angle of incidence (between 0 degree to 90 degrees each). The investigation consisted of infrared light characterization such as angle of incidence of infrared light and its wavelengths, towards effective detection of hidden veins useful for difficult to access blood draw conditions for specific population such as children, elders, obese, dark skin, etc. The experimental results exhibited highest accuracy to detect hidden veins by using illumination source at narrow incidence angle to the body and the wavelength range between 850-940 nm.
